What is Labour Card

The Ministry of Labour and Employment in India has been set up specifically to oversee the welfare of workers. As implied by its name, this ministry focuses primarily on the employment and welfare of workers.

In a country where a considerable portion of the population falls within the low-income bracket, many depend on manual labor, agriculture, and similar occupations for their livelihoods.

The “Labour Card,” issued by state governments but governed by the central government, serves as an identification card providing support to laborers and their dependent families.

Individuals who fulfill the criteria for employment can apply for this card to access its benefits. There are two specific types of Labor cards available: the “Building Labor Card” and the “Social Labor Card.”

Individuals working under a duly licensed contractor are eligible to apply for the building card, which grants them access to most benefits provided through the program.

Those involved in agricultural work, non-building tasks, or farming qualify for the social card, enabling them to access health insurance benefits.
